Tokyo Olympics: Carli Lloyd gets the exit she deserves with brilliant bronze-medal game|

The image was powerful, but given its subject, it was all wrong. There was Carli Lloyd, sitting on a soccer ball in an empty stadium after a semifinal loss in the Tokyo Olympics, her staring at the ground with her hands on the top of her head.

Devastation. Defeat.

Again: All wrong.

That couldn’t be the last image of Lloyd on the biggest stage, not given her almost unprecedented international resume  and her penchant for coming up big when the games matter the most. Lloyd hadn’t come out and said it, but everyone knew: This was it for the 39-year-old former Rutgers star in major tournaments.
